Unemployment
In 2022, the number of unemployed people in Palermo fell by 2.7 %, from 47 thousand to 46 thousand. If we compare the figure for 2022 with the figure before the pandemic in 2019 (39 thousand unemployed), however, there was a significant increase in the number of unemployed, corresponding to 18.8 %. The unemployment rate in 2022 was 20.6%, 0.3 percentage points lower than in 2021 but 2.9 percentage points higher than in 2019. A comparison with the other major cities again shows a contrast between the cities in the northern center with unemployment rates between 3.3% in Bologna and 8.1% in Turin and the cities in the south with unemployment rates between 20.6% in Palermo and 34.9% in Messina.
